The Foundation of Leadership Begins With YOU

Start by heading to your bathroom mirror. Stand there and take a deep honest look at the person staring back at you. Do you see a leader? If you can not honestly answer YES to that question, then this is where we begin.

The very first thing you must do is define your core values. Core values are the ideals you choose to live by. For example, always be on time may be a core value that resonates with you, or it might be something else. These are YOUR core values and you must identify them, write them down, and affirm them daily

By taking time to define and state your core values you are on your way to developing that personal leadership style that works for you and for others.

Finding your core values might take some soul searching and some time. Set aside a few hours to think deeply about those values that define who you are and drive how you will live and lead yourself and others.

After you have your core values stated and written it is time to define your personal mission statement. Ask yourself… what is it I intend to do in my life? Where am I headed? What do I wish to accomplish?

Think of your mission statement as your guiding light. That light will keep you focused on the mission and show you a path toward where you intend to go.

Here are a few personal mission statements from some famous people found at brandongaille.com.

“To bring joy and happiness to other people.”
~ Walt Disney

“To do more than survive, but to grow and live with passion, while meeting life with compassion, humor, and style.”
~ Maya Angelou

“To live a life without fear or ill will for any person. To refuse to submit to injustice. To conquer untruth with truth, and by doing this to put up with any kind of suffering.”
~ Mahatma Gandhi

“To serve and help others. To facilitate the education of every girl on planet earth.”
~ Malala Yousafzai

“To be successful, start thinking about yourself as a personal brand.”
~ William Arruda

Now that you have your personal core values set and a solid mission statement that drives you go back to your bathroom mirror. Look into the reflection in the mirror and ask… Am I a leader? You should have a new found feeling of YES I am on my way to being a great leader!

Remember, the mirror is your best friend and truth seer along the quest to lead yourself and others.

Bottom Line

Leadership starts with YOU! That start is found in the foundations of leadership, which are personal core values and a mission statement that drives you forward.
